I have a friend who tried to replace a battery on an old Solio solar charger, but in the process of doing so dismantled too much of the device. In re-opening up the Solio, it looks like there are some severed wires that are supposed to connect two of the three solar petals to the charger. I **think** the device will currently work but only for the main panel, which makes it a bit slow and impractical. She is looking for someone who might be able to replace the damaged wires and get it operational again. It's out of my wheelhouse, but I'm hoping someone in this group might be willing to take a look. (Ours is the original Solio Classic? it has undergone design improvements over the years). Well, it sat on a shelf unused, so I decided we should bring it with us to Haiti when we go so that someone who needs it could use it. I want to give Stevenson and Kendy?s cousin Valerie an old ipod, and this would provide her with a way to charge it. (Her brother could also use it as a small business? charging people?s cell phones, because it comes with lots of adaptors.) Anyway, I discovered that sitting on the shelf was not good for the battery, and the battery needed replacing. I ordered a new battery, and when Bob tried to install it last night, he ended up taking too much of the gadget apart and breaking a wire. He also can?t quite put it back together properly. I?m wondering if you or one of your techy/gadget savvy friends might be willing to try to Save Our Solio? If it is not fixable, I?ll need to find another (cheaper) way to charge an ipod and will try to find a hand crank version. We've fixed things for people in the past and our happy to take a look at it to see if we can help. We won't be meeting at the Collaboration Room this Wednesday, but instead are holding a workshop a 1061 S. Walnut behind Russian Recording. It's free to stop by, and we'll be there from 7pm until 11pm. We'll have all the tools we would need to take a look at the charger, so feel free to bring it on by. We'll be back at the Collaboration Room the week after that. If Wednesday don't work for you, I'm betting we could work something else out. Just drop me a note. I wanted to share some info with everyone about the space. It's located in a strip mall just north of 2nd Avenue on Curry Pike and Roll Road. The space is 1,000 sq ft which is 750 sq ft of unfinished, cement floor workspace and 250 sq ft of finished office space. The office space has about 150 sq ft of a main room with two big windows - it would make a great lounge. There are two smaller office type rooms that are about 50 sq ft. each. The space also has a bathroom that includes a shower. The space is more expensive than our current space - $500 a month plus utilities (electric, water, and taxes). I think the space will cost us $700 a month which is quite a bit more than the $400 we pay now. We would need to have a big membership drive which would be must easier if we have a cool space, or have members pay a bit more (we're thinking $50 a month), or we could also have two tiers of membership dues - I know several of us in the group wouldn't mind paying more and perhaps we can find some benefits to being in the higher tier. The drawbacks to the space are that it is on the edge of town, although it's not that far out. It is close to things we really want to be close to - like Radio Shack, Lowes, and Wal-Mart. There are also apartments above the space, but the owner says that should not be a problem. We are going to put a noise clause in our lease such that if the tenants have issues with our noise and we can't work out a compromise (and I'm not willing to compromise much), then we can get out of the lease. I have pictures of the space here: http://harold.uits.indiana.edu/~jtillots/hackerspace Note, the bathroom will be finished and the junk will be gone out of the work room. I have asked that they not finished the wall and not finish the floors in the work room. We are going to try to arrange a trip to the space in mid-March. I'll keep everyone posted. Get back to me with any questions or concerns. Jenett -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
