Also, tonight is Public Hack Night (7pm at our 3927 W Roll Ave location), free as always, if you'd like to join us. Arduino Classes happening in October: Bloominglabs is offering a 2-part workshop that will get you up and running with Arduino programming. You?ll learn the basics and we?ll save you time by helping you avoid pitfalls that stumped us when we were starting out. While it doesn?t hurt to have a programming background, it?s not required. The Arduino is a popular, affordable, and accessible platform for microcontroller programming. It can be used to control LED lights, motors in a robot, and to trigger sounds. It can be used to make game controllers or art projects, or anything you can dream up. Sessions are Oct 17th and 24th at 7pm, the price is $30 for 2 2-hour sessions (although we?ll hang out longer if you want to experiment and play some more). Please bring your own laptop with the free Arduino software installed (you can get it here:http://arduino.cc/en/main/software ) All other materials (Arduino, breadboards, sensors, motors, piezo speakers, and LEDs) will be provided. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... You can find out more information about the workshop here: http://wonderlab.org/programs/events-calendar/maker-lab-speakers.html If you would be willing to help with this workshop, please get back to me. You'll get free admission to Wonderlab for the day, and the workshop is a ton of fun. We've done it several places now, and the kids always have to be stopped they are enjoying themselves so much. Plus, it's cool just to see how simple a speaker actually is. Get back to me if you are willing to volunteer and hope to see you on Saturday! And spread the word to your friends with kids. My kids and I visited Bloominglabs for the first time last week, and we were quite impressed. We met a number of nice intelligent people in an informal atmosphere with an eclectic group of projects and technologies represented. Very cool! My children Mitchell (14) and Morgan (13) are home schooled and we are looking for learning opportunities. The best way to learn anything is by doing it! Are there any cool projects that the kids can get involved in? I'd like to avoid overly-organized, centrally-planned (and thus limited) projects. Going in a more free-form direction could lead to something that is much more more interesting. If there aren't any pre-existing projects for kids being done in this environment, we'd like to get some kids together and brainstorm a project that they could work on. If there's interest, I'm willing to organize and facilitate. Thanks! Mark W. Message-ID: Hi everyone, My advisers and I are working with Intel, and we are considering the idea of sponsoring a hackathon-like event in BloomingLabs. We would likely bring in some hardware into the space and suggest an interesting topic and just say "go!" It also sounds like at least some of the new hardware can stay permanently in the space for us to use however we want. Most likely, this would last a whole day on a weekend and we'll probably provide free food. I'm writing to get a sense of the interest in an event like this. Please let me know if you think you would come to something like this, and of course if you have any questions or concerns. I'm hoping this could be something that happens semi-regularly!
