Message-ID: <933F7F79-A658-4FFF-8343-01133C851DE0@packetsniffers.org> Greetings! Bloominglabs is proud to announce that it's machining class is now ready to open up to the public! We've been running this class internally for members since June of last year and it's been very well received so far. We have three spaces available for this next round of classes. Class description: We are presenting a machine tool workshop focusing on manual mill and lathe work. The goal of this workshop is to get students able to safely and comfortably perform lathe and mill operations and be able to continue their learning by doing further projects after the workshop has concluded. Machine tool work requires a lot of knowledge including book learning along with practical experience. This workshop will get participants started with a basic understanding of lathe and mill operations and other related skills. We will start with safety, then cover proper operations of the mill and the lathe. Then we will cover indicating and measurments followed by the project. The project will be an aluminum plumb-bob. Time frame and class scheduling: Two weeks are given before the start of class for homework to be completed. The class is four weeks long and consists of four one-evening sessions of three hours each, one session per week. We will schedule dates for the class based upon times which work for the students taking the class. Homework: The homework consists of 5 chapters of related books to be read and several hours of training videos to be watched by any students taking the class. Homework materials will be provided electronically. Cost: This class will cost $150 per student. This will cover all materials needed by the student. Payment is required up-front before classes will be scheduled. Web site for this class: http://bloominglabs.org/index.php/Machining_Workshop_I Please reply to my email off-list if you are interested. This course will be a rigorous, college level course that will meet once a week for 2 and a half hours for 10 weeks. I will be teaching the course, and I have expertise in many areas of AI, particularly neural nets and genetic algorithms. We will charge $25 for the course for Bloominglabs members and $125 for non-members. That's $5 an hour for college-level instruction in AI. It's a great deal! I will rely heavily on the lectures from an AI course at Berkeley: http://inst.eecs.berkeley.edu/~cs188/fa11/lectures.html This course uses Russell and Norvig's book "Artificial Intelligence: A Modern Approach" which you can find on amazon here: http://www.amazon.com/Artificial-Intelligence-Modern-Approach-Edition/dp/0136042597 This is an excellent textbook and I will make a copy of the second edition available at Bloominglabs during the course. Prerequisites are: * Some ability to program. You will be free to complete the assignments in any language you prefer. Note, my expertise is in C, and I will be most likely use C to demonstrate the concepts in this course. You will be expected to: * Attend class * Review online materials for each class that I would like people to skim before coming to class There will be homeworks which will not be required, but will help your understanding of the course if you do them. I've created a doodle poll for determining which day of the week we should have the course here: http://doodle.com/9mgevub3uv7b5uww I'm thinking we will meet 6:30pm to 9pm, but I could adjust that if needed. If you would like to attend the course, please go to the doodle poll and show your availability. Feel free to email me with any questions. Note, Bloominglabs currently has a microprocessor group that meets on Thursdays nights, but that's going to either be moved to a different night, or I think we can figure out how both groups can use the space pretty easily. We will meet for the first time on Thursday, January 30th, at 6:30pm at Bloominglabs. This will be an organizational meeting where we will discuss what each of us want to get out of the course, what topics we will cover, and which weeks we will meet. We will meet for 10 more weeks after that, skipping weeks here and there, but going no later than May 1st. Come on Thursday with a list of topics you would like to cover, any papers you would like to discuss, or any projects you have in mind. Please bring $25 if you are a member at $125 if you are not a member to the first day of class. Please feel free to spread this around.
