I'm trying to find a good reference link, I saw one of these style
contraptions at a Mountain Man Rendezvous in Wyoming some 20 years

It's a manual grist mill wheel driver. The arm holds a shaft with
the grist wheel on one end and a matching cogged wheel that
meshes.. 3 people man the push rods while the fourth uses the
whistle to keep them in time/pace. Would have likely been a small
farm family owned grist mill setup.. <br>

We saw the article about you in the current
issue of Bloom magazine. The accompanying
photo had a contraption in the background that
slightly resembled this one. We found this
thing sitting on the sidewalk a year or two
ago. It was at about this time of year, during
the city's bulk trash removal week when
everyone leaves stuff they don't want sitting
out for the trash collectors. We have no idea
what it is - do you? It had (and still has) a
plastic whistle attached to it for some
mysterious reason.<br>

to hear what you know!<br>
